The Challenge
This one had a few layers to it.
The property in Acacia Bay sat on a sloped section, standard for that part of town, with a steep driveway and no direct street access for a large truck. The crew had to position the 55m³ truck on the road and work from there, adding time to every load run.
Inside, the home had two separate stairways. The main living area was downstairs; bedrooms and a study were up a narrow internal staircase. Most of the heavy furniture – a king bed, two wardrobes, and a large bookshelf – had to come down that staircase before it could go anywhere near the truck.
The piano was the item the family were most worried about. An upright piano that had been in the family for years was sitting in the lounge at the bottom of the stairs. Getting it out without marking the walls or the instrument itself required some planning before we started.
Then there was the double garage. Two cars’ worth of storage space, boxes, outdoor furniture, a workbench, gardening equipment, and bikes. The family had kept it organised, which helped, but it was a full load in itself.
The destination in Napier added roughly two hours of driving each way. A same-day delivery meant an early start.
Our Approach
The crew arrived at 7 am. Before anything was loaded, the team lead walked through the property with the homeowner – noting the piano, the staircase furniture, and anything fragile or particularly awkward.
The piano came out first while energy levels were high. Two crew members handled it with piano skates and a furniture dolly, walking it through the lounge and out the front door without touching the walls. Blanket-wrapped and strapped into the truck before anything else went in.
The staircase furniture was next, each piece wrapped in moving blankets before it left the room. The narrow internal staircase made it slow work, but slow was the right pace there. Rushing staircases is how damage happens.
The garage was loaded last. Outdoor furniture was stacked flat, bikes were hung upright, and boxes were stacked tightly. The workbench was disassembled; one of the crew had brought the right tools after it was mentioned in the booking notes.
The drive to Napier took just over two hours. Delivery and placement at the other end took about ninety minutes; the family directed where everything went, including the piano into its spot in the new lounge.
The Result
The family were settled in their new Napier home by 4 pm the same day, earlier than the estimated finish. The piano arrived without a mark on it. Everything was delivered as planned.
The homeowner had been particularly nervous about the piano and the staircase furniture – both came through without incident. The garage contents, which the family had half-expected to be chaos by the end, were placed in the new garage in a sensible order.
