The Challenge
The customer was relocating for work – a fixed start date and no flexibility on timing. The move needed to be planned precisely around the ferry schedule, and delivery had to land on a specific day.
She was moving alone, with a full 2-bedroom apartment to pack. Not unusual, but she was also working full-time up until the move date and had no time to pack herself. A full packing service was the only realistic option.
The Nukuhau apartment had second-floor access with an internal staircase and no lift. All furniture and boxes had to come down the stairs. The staircase was standard width and manageable, but it slowed the loading phase.
Inter-island moves add complexity that purely road-based moves do not have. The ferry crossing adds several hours of transit. Items experience more movement than on a road journey; the truck is loaded onto the vessel, and the load has to be secured for a crossing that can be rough in bad weather. The strait was forecast to be moderate the day of the crossing.
Our Approach
The pack happened the day before the move. Two crew members spent the morning packing the apartment, the kitchen first (the most time-consuming room), then the bedrooms, the bathroom, and the lounge. The customer had bought some art she was particularly worried about. We wrapped each piece individually in double-layer protection before boxing.
Everything was labelled by room. The customer had requested that certain boxes go in a specific order in the new apartment; she had made a list, and we worked from it.
Loading started early the next morning. With a ferry to catch in Wellington and a crossing time factored in, timing was tighter than a standard local move. The staircase was slow but manageable; all furniture was wrapped before it was moved, same as any job.
The drive to Wellington took just under four and a half hours. We loaded onto the Interislander with time to spare. On the ferry, the truck is secured to the vehicle deck, but we had also added extra strapping to the load inside, particularly around the boxed artwork and the TV.
Delivery in Wellington the following morning. The customer met us at the new apartment. Everything was placed per her list, and the artwork was unwrapped and checked in front of her: all present, all undamaged.
The Result
Delivered on the day required, within the window the customer needed. The artwork and belongings arrived safely, including the pieces she had been most anxious about. The ferry crossing was moderate, but the load arrived at the other end exactly as it left Taupō.
The customer had the apartment largely set up by the end of delivery day, which meant she could start work the next morning without spending her first evening surrounded by unpacked boxes.
